Starting therapy often comes with questions. Whether you’re exploring treatment for the first time or looking for specialized support, you’ll find answers to common questions below.
GETTING STARTED
What to Know Before Your First Session
How do I get started with therapy?
The first step is scheduling a consultation to discuss what you’re looking for, ask questions, and determine whether Becoming You Therapy may be a good fit. If we decide to move forward, you’ll receive information about completing intake paperwork and scheduling your first appointment.
Do you offer in-person or online therapy?
Becoming You Therapy is a fully virtual practice. Sessions are conducted through a secure telehealth platform, allowing you to attend from a private location without traveling to an office.
What states do you provide therapy in?
I provide online therapy to eligible clients physically located in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Florida at the time of their appointments, subject to applicable licensing and registration requirements. Florida services are provided under my out-of-state telehealth registration.
What happens during the first therapy session?
Your first session focuses on getting to know you, understanding your concerns, reviewing relevant history, and discussing what you’d like to gain from therapy. You don’t have to share every detail of your trauma before you’re ready.
How often will we meet for therapy?
Session frequency depends on your needs, treatment goals, and availability. Many clients begin with weekly appointments, while others may benefit from a different schedule. We’ll discuss what makes sense for your situation.
THERAPY & TREATMENT
Understanding the Healing Process
What types of trauma do you specialize in?
I specialize in supporting adult women who have experienced domestic violence, coercive control, sexual assault, narcissistic abuse, trauma bonding, PTSD, and complex trauma. Treatment is individualized and informed by your experiences, symptoms, and goals.
What is EMDR therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories and experiences. EMDR uses structured phases and bilateral stimulation to support adaptive processing of traumatic material.
Do I have to talk about every detail of my trauma during EMDR?
No. EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a traumatic experience aloud. We will first assess your history, current symptoms, coping resources, and readiness before determining whether EMDR is appropriate.
How long does trauma therapy take?
There isn’t a universal timeline. The length of therapy depends on your history, current concerns, goals, and response to treatment. We’ll establish meaningful goals and review your progress together.
Do you offer Christian trauma therapy?
Yes. For clients who want faith integrated into treatment, I offer an approach that incorporates Christian perspectives alongside evidence-based trauma therapy. Faith integration is guided by your preferences and does not require you to minimize your experiences or rush forgiveness or reconciliation.
Do you offer couples therapy?
Yes. I offer trauma-informed couples therapy focused on understanding relationship dynamics, communication, emotional safety, and relational patterns. During the consultation process, we can discuss whether couples therapy is appropriate for your situation.
RATES & INSURANCE
Understanding the Financial Side of Therapy
Do you accept insurance?
Becoming You Therapy accepts select insurance plans. Participation varies by payer and plan, so coverage should be verified before your first appointment. You can review current information on the Rates & Insurance page.
How much does therapy cost?
The standard private-pay rate is $230 for an initial diagnostic assessment and $200 for a 53-minute individual therapy session. Couples therapy is $200 per session. Your actual out-of-pocket cost may differ when using insurance, depending on your benefits.
Can I use insurance for EMDR therapy?
Existing clients may be able to use insurance for clinically appropriate EMDR treatment, subject to plan coverage and medical necessity. New clients specifically seeking EMDR services are currently accepted on a private-pay basis at $200 per session and intake is $230.
Can I choose private pay even if I have insurance?
Private pay may be an option depending on your insurance plan and applicable requirements. We’ll review payment arrangements before starting services.
Do you offer superbills for out-of-network reimbursement?
If appropriate, a superbill may be available for clients seeking out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your insurance plan’s benefits and requirements.
What is your cancellation policy?
A $150 late-cancellation or no-show fee may apply under the practice’s attendance policy, where permitted. Different rules apply to certain insurance programs, including Medicaid. The complete policy is provided during intake.
When is payment due?
Client-responsibility payments are due before the scheduled session in accordance with the practice’s payment policy. Any insurance adjustments or remaining balances will be handled according to your benefits and billing arrangements.
